Ohakune Competition 06 Sep 2011

chris The Ohakune mid-year competition was a revival of traditions past. The weekend consisted of games, snow, trains, a light-hearted brief, chocolate eclairs and visits to the big carrot.

After disembarking the train in the pouring snow, we migrated to the Ohakune Club - the cosy venue complete with fireplace and pokie machine - that was to be our headquarters for the weekend. When the groups were made up, the brief was unveiled. No dystopian futures for us. This time the brief was a light-hearted play on the tension created between competing factors in Ohakune's context: locals vs visitors, summer vs winter, mountain vs town, agriculture vs extreme sport.

In the spirit of the competition, there were several challenges interspersed through the main design brief. An architectural quiz, architecture Pictionary and a muddy tug of war had most of the teams neck-in-neck for points as the weekend progressed.

A variety of outcomes were designed, from a giant luge, to volcanic pressure-relief systems, to tourist traps and more. The winners were announced and prizes awarded over brunch on Sunday morning before heading back on the train. We were pleased with the turn out and enthusiasm of everyone present and plan to continue with the event next year!
