Hi
Last year myself and Jo Baker, both third year Newcastle architecture students, put together a gap year project to expand our 'paper based education' into the real world of architecture. The project was initiated after we heard the words of Richard Leplastrier, 'How can you expect to design a building if you don't know how to build one'. Richard is very excited that we have put his advice into to practice and is a great supporter of egresStudio and this project.
egresS is a studio based design collaborative who's aim is to broaden the architectural education of not only ourselves, but also any interested students from all related disciplines from universities around the country.
Our first project, '3 Houses at Pokolbin' was created to allow us to design, document and construct a building from start to finish. This idea has been welcomed with enthusiasm from the design and building community, with architects, engineers, builders and suppliers taking us under their wings to guide us through the project. The project was initially mentored through the AIA student mentor scheme, teaming us up with Liquid Architecture. This has ensured that the project has been designed, drawn and run in accordance with best architectural practices. It has also allowed us to fall under the umbrella of their insurance.
The project involves the construction of 3 tourist units located on a vineyard at Pokolbin in the Hunter Valley. Purchase of the property was selected by the design team, a group of 6 Newcastle University students, who then designed and documented the buildings. Construction is now under way, and the project is aiming to have a strong support of students from universities from Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and New Zealand volunteering their time over the next 8 months to work as labourers along side our professional build team. The students also have the opportunity to work on design details, which they can then bring to life on the building site.
I am writing to you in the hope that you may forward an invitation to all of your students in the school; to come and get involved and learn practical experience of the architecture and building industry. The experience and education returned from this project is invaluable.
The details of student support is as follows:
- all work is on a voluntary basis
- students will need a construction induction white card. We can get this provided for free and organise this for you through the Master Builders Association(one of the project sponsors).
- days of construction are Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Long days followed by detailed design work/talking of architecture/project management for those interested in the evenings.
- our project encourages a 'total immersion', we offer free accommodation at the adjacent guesthouse, beer, and dinner for the two nights during construction.
- we are flexible with dates; usually the dates that suit you will suit us.
- students that get involved will be invited along to events and conferences offered to egresStudio, supplier and sponsor meetings, both distant and local, etc..
The project is self funded and relies heavily on the support of sponsorship partners. To date our sponsored services and materials are around $150,000, with the intention of building this figure up to $250,00 by the end of the year. The project is not for profit - with any future profits being used to fund future egresStudio architectural community aid projects. Our accountants have projected that the profit from renting these units will be around $80,000/year. We hope that these on going projects will be run in conjunction with a university as part of their official curriculum.
Anyone interested can send us through an email or give us a call. We have also attached an information pack of the project.
