Designing to 24 hour deadline 15 Aug 2009

“Project yourself into the year 2048 and imagine a world without oil.”

This was the brief for 60 architecture students competing in Australasian 24-hour design contest ‘Superstudio’ on Friday evening, who had just 24 hours to come up with ideas for what would become of petrol station sites.

“Excitement around Victoria’s School of Architecture and Design campus could be felt as the day drew nearer to registration time on Friday evening,” says event organiser Anna Wallace.

As well as Victoria University students, Auckland University and UNITEC students came down to join in the fun.

Tutors dropped in throughout the day on Saturday to inspire, provoke and question the various teams’ design concepts.

Presentations were made Pecha Kutcha style on Saturday evening, with teams given 200 seconds to present 20 slides (20 seconds per slide) of their concept.

“The presentations were both impressive and hilarious,” says Anna. “One winning concept even involved turning toxic human waste into fuel!” Crack up.

The other winning ideas were 'surrogate travellers,' who could operate flying devices remotely on interactive helium-mounted cameras from anywhere in the world, enabling them to ‘travel’ without leaving home; and using unused petrol station sites for vertical self sufficient hydroponic farming - maintained and used by communities within walking distances of the old petrol station - using the "bigness" theorem by Rem Koolhaaus' allowing for complex programing within one building.

The teams’ design concepts have been entered into the Australasian final, with the top prize of return airfares to the Venice Architecture Biennale for the students to dream about. We'll keep you posted on the result of this!

Two of the winning teams were from Victoria University: Elaina Hong, Emma Buchanan and Holly Drummond; and William Samuels, Jonathan Murdoch and Jack Bush — along with an Auckland University team comprising Jordon Saunders, Frances Cooper and Seth Munn.

“Students enjoyed swapping stories at the after party at Concrete Bar,” says Anna. “Overall, students were amazed at what they could produce in 24 hours and enjoyed meeting new people. Many said they’d be recommending it to their fellow students next year.”

Next year’s Superstudio will be held at Unitec in Auckland.
